Run60

What can I say, an experience of a lifetime I wouldn’t have missed it – I hated the training  but it was worth every frostbitten finger.   The day started at 7.30am with David walking me to the Red Start and then I was on my own amongst thousands of other madmen.

Through the red gate we were in a fenced compound the atmosphere was quiet, yet jolly and of course full of anticipation. The fancy dresses were being donned, and fresh make up applied (that was mainly the chaps).

There were TV cameras picking out the eccentrics and music to jolly us along.  Tea, coffee and water readily available and of course rows of toilets – as promised – I don’t think the toilet paper ran out either!  On that note there were urinals for both men and women but not mixed! (other femail competitors had an “appliance” in their packs – I didn’t receive one so couldn’t venture into the femail urinal – thank goodness!)

Everyone  packed their belongings into red sacks which were loaded onto the fleet of lorries and we all made our way to the start.  I had a nine on the bottom of my number which meant I was at the back with the fancy dress people.  I’d put an anticipated time of 5.30hrs on my entry form so obviously the faster times are at the front – but I did pass some of them near the end.

The gun went off and the months of preparation had come to an end, yet we weren’t moving, we could see the big screen through the trees and Red Start runners were streaming through the gates, but we weren’t moving.   Gradually, we edged forward and 21 minutes after the gun, my group reached the start line.  It doesn’t really matter as we all carry individual electronic tags so each individual’s time is recorded regardless.

Hats off to the Rhinos though, those people must be very fit to keep the pace up especially as it gets hotter, watching all the people in fancy dress was inspirational and often amusing.

I had a wonderful support team of 10, David(husband), James (son), Alice(soon to be daughter-in-law), Rupert(step son), Christian(son), Andrew(godson, G’s brother), Jonny(son), Anne(G’s Mum & my school friend), Mark(G’s boyfriend) and of course Georgina(goddaughter) who got me into this by running last year.

This group followed me round and popped up like Meerkats in many unexpected places which meant I had to keep running in case they were round the next bend.  Of course, it was only polite to pause and say hello.

Turning right over Tower Bridge (12-13miles) and heading east while all the fast runners were heading back on the opposite carriageway, was quite a mental hurdle, I perked in mile 14 and was fine after that.  Mile 19 was another hurdle as that was the furthest I’d run in training and I had been in a state of collapse by the end of that run.  I know I slowed around the 19 mile mark as my Garmin XT10 had been bleeping on every mile. I felt hesitant as I was now entering new territory of the unknown last 7miles, it was purely in the mind as when I checked the extremities and the breathing, I was fine.

The Garmin was great but it is very accurate and because I’d been taking advice and running in the shadow of buildings where possible, (so not following the blue marathon line on the road)  I’d already clocked up a quarter of a mile extra – which was slightly depressing and as the miles were chewed up, often just off the blue line, the further I seemed to move “off piste” and lengthen the run. Believe me, every step counts near the end.

It’s true what everyone says about the day, the crowds, bands and atmosphere are extraordinary, when you are running you are either reading the back s of competitors T-shirts or trying to focus on a sea of faces.  (A word of advice for the 5hr+ runners – run in the middle of the road outside the pubs as everyone is very jolly at lunchtime and some revellers step out to cheer you on – all good fun though).  The Tenko drummers under the flyover were a real boost as I could hear them over my iPod Shuffle which was on full blast the whole time providing a mixture of Dance and Ibiza beach music.

Talking of the Shuffle, it was that which boosted me to run a bit faster in the last few miles as a voice cut in over the blaring music to tell me my battery was low – I can’t run without “sounds” so I sped up (a little).

I’d been careful not to overdo it.  Massimo had told me to take it easy keep a regular pace – people were dropping like flies, stopping to stretch or being stretchered.  As it was hot, I had been sipping water and taking Lucozade gels every half hour after the two hour mark and I felt fine, none of the disorientation and faintness that I’d had on the training runs, so at mile 23 I threw the water away, told myself I was going out for my local jog and pushed on.

What a feeling when you cross that line, I was so buoyant that I kept running till I got the timing tag removal team and then marched off to the  lorries to collect my red sack.  I phoned the Meerkats and they’d been stuck on a pedestrian island waiting for me to run by and were stunned I’d already finished, so I set off for the Charring Cross hotel where CLDF were hosting the reception for the runners and I’d had two mugs of hot tea, provided by Rachel, before the gang arrived.

I was so pleased to see them, although you are surrounded by thousands of friendly runners, everyone is doing their thing and in parts it’s quite a solitary experience especially towards the end when it’s all about your finishing time.

The question is now, would I do it again?

I travelled up to London’s ExCel centre early on Wednesday, anyone living in or near London was asked to avoid the busy days of Friday and Saturday.   Everything is so well organised, I had my number, red plastic bag (very important) and electronic tag within minutes.

There was excitement and concern in the air, my stomach was in a knot but having overheard a couple of comments  “I fell downstairs last night” and “I’ve already lost some of my toenails”, I realised I wasn’t the only one who was on edge.  I just can’t wait to get started (get it over with) and  hopefully enjoy the day.

The pressing concern is what tunes to put on my Nano and to make sure I pack my trainers on the day.

There are 24 runners for Children’s Liver Disease Foundation so if you are watching the race we will be in blue T-shirts with yellow trim.

Hopefully I’ll be in this year’s group photo, last year’s look a relieved bunch!

I really did not want to run today, everything still hurt from the 19 miles I ran last week.

However, it was a beautiful day, not too warm when I set of at 9.15 and as the run progressed into Black Park, the lake was sparkling and I found I was actually enjoying myself!  I’d been on a pasta/high carb diet for two days, no cafine, no sweetners for a week and did I feel good, I think I’ve got the pre-race diet right at last.

This is where I confess that I have had terrible “running stress” problems  from which I have suffered on every run over an hour.  At this point I would like to thank Chorleywood railway station and The White Hart in Chalfont St Giles, for their hospitality last week on the long run!  Yes, I have now cured the problem, Immodium rules, I will say no more.

I returned to find Massimo, training James (eldest son) who is an enthusiastic runner  – first full frontal photo of Massimo the torturing PT who seems to have got me fit enough to get round – so thanks to him.

I think I’m looking forward to the London Marathon again.Just Giving to Children’s Liver Disease Foundation – thank you

…culminated with me staggering into the hall and collapsing with a whimper to the floor where I had to stay until the pain in my hips subsided.  I then crawled to the bathroom, which fortunately is on the ground floor, and plunged into the freezing water where I sat shivering for only a couple of minutes (not really long enough).

Luckily my godson Andrew (Georgina’s brother) turned up a few minutes later and made reviving tea and within minutes I was feeling a great deal better.

I’ve now recovered, the faintness and queesiness have gone and can get up the stairs without holding the bannister, so there’s a plus.  I am told that running that distance, on busy roads, alone, is a hard thing to do compared to the encouraging atmosphere of running with 37,000 other madmen. I’ll let you know!

However, I also felt quite bad after my first 12 mile run – but subsequent runs never hurt as much -  and that is why these activities are called “training runs”, so let’s hope it’s done the trick.

With only a couple of weeks to go, I am now looking forward to the event, not just to get it over with but hopefully to enjoy running with other people, it’s been a solitary experience apart from the training hour I spend with Massimo once a week.

Mustn’t forget the charity that I’m putting myself through this for, the Childrens Liver Disease Foundation do such excellent work and need all our support.  I’m lucky enough to be healthy enough to put myself through this without too much discomfort, and get  a tremendous feeling of satisfaction from hitting my goals week by week – I just hope that I hit my sponsorship target.

Having read my Runners World magazine last night, I now appreciate the value of positive thinking and had a good training run through Bulstrode Park. I even managed to run up the hills today and my average speed was OK .

The hour I was out was almost pleasant  I thought winning thoughts all the way round.

On my return, I totalled up my miles  running in the fresh air (excluding treadmill) since acquiring my Garmin Forerunner and was surprised it was 117 miles.  Ultra runners would do that over a couple of days – in extreme conditions.  Still it’s a hundred more miles that I ran last year! So let’s be positive.

I was imagining how an unwanted pet might feel as I was left  on the side of the road miles from home.

It was the warmest day I’ve run in and I had to strip off a few layers – amusing a couple of walkers. I made sure I kept drinking too.  The route followed the mountain river down from the Sixt waterfall to Taninges,  snow topped mountains towering above.  The path alternated between decent  wide paths and narrow pebble and root tracks.

Having played it safe this week and not skiied, I first tripped badly in the woods and then turned my ankle over on the edge of the road I’d rejoined near Taninges.  Both could have been disasterous but I was lucky!  The body core strength exercises I’ve been working on  kept me upright and although I would hear the ligaments in my ankle over the loud Nano I am amazed to report that no real damage seems to have been done!

I made it to town after a couple of hours but hadn’t checked that my small phone worked so took a while to get in touch with D who had been shopping and was hunting wild life in the woods.

Reunited we returned to the flat for lunch. I’m quite stiff as I wasn’t able to have my freezing bath (shame) so will have to keep moving – cleaning the flat should sort that problelm out. (would prefer a lie down really)

Looking forward to my 18 mile run once I get home – a date to be named soon.

This makes a change, running in the mountains – freezing but sunny and pretty. Forget the fact that breathing is more difficult and my max heart rate went up to 194 bpm.

4 miles was quite pleasant.

Managed 10.4 miles, it was quite pleasant when I left, by the end it was freezing rain. All went well, bit slower than usual, the knee ached this time, so took it easy.

Plunged into cold bath when I got back and stayed in as long as I could. A very strange thing happend 15 minutes later when I had a hot shower, the hot water hitting my legs felt cold! It wasn’t, it was piping hot, very strange!

Drank lots of water and kept moving so not too stiff this evening. Having done more on the Bosu balancer when training in the gym this week, when the souls of my feet felt the burn, my feet ached today too, which was interesting.

Still haven’t got broadband at home, borrowing someone elses WiFi at the moment!

I was unable to train yesterday as I spent most of the day wainting for BT Openreach to reconnect my broadband (it’s still off). So depressing they switched off phone + BT Infinity by mistake, in seconds, and are now taking days to reconnect – stunning.

It made me so angry & stressed that at the gym today  I threw myself into training so worked quite hard. Must have done, I was a lot “damper” than usual.

I know polyester takes moisture away fro the body, prefereable to clingy cotton in the cooling stakes, but why do I always get the feeling that it’s making me perspire more.

On that note…… looking forward to a long run tomorrow in dayglo nylons.

I was under instruction to run for an hour and if not too uncomfortable, I had to keep going. It was a pleasant day, probably one of the best I’ve been out in, and although my hamstring hurt, I was able to adjust my stride and kept going without too much discomfort.

As I wasn’t planning on running far today, I didn’t eat particularly well yesterday – and felt it! I had a couple of pieces of toast and a small banana for breakfast but after a while I began to run out of steam. Worse I only took a tiny bottle of water.

However, I did have a large bag of Jelly Babies and that boosted me enough to get me round.

So, with lack of nutrition and water, I still managed to do a decent run – the first one for a month.

A plunge into a freezing bath helped the soreness but unfortunately, I had to sit in a meeting for three hours this afternoon so David was pressed into action as a masseur – he did a sterling job.
